  • Students must meet all eligibility for EOPS
  • Established court dependency on or after 13th birthday (verification required)

NextUp

NextUp (formerly Promise Scholars/CAFYES) is an expanded EOPS program which provides various supports for current and former foster youth.

Our purpose is to encourage the enrollment, retention and transfer of current and former foster youth at Fresno City Community College.

NextUp provides services dedicated to help current and former foster youth enrolled at Fresno City College reach their higher educational goals. Services include, but are not limited to:

COUNSELING & EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT
  • One-on-One Counseling
  • Registration assistance and transcript review
  • Assistance with college and financial aid application
  • Development of a Comprehensive Student Educational Plan (SEP)
CAREER & EMPLOYMENT
  • Career counseling supported by our Career Employment Center
  • Assistance with resume, cover letter, and job searches
  • Access to Counseling and Career Exploration classes
PERSONALIZED NEXTUP TUTOR SERVICES
  • One-on-One Tutor assistance in Math and English
  • Assistance accessing tutors for other subject areas
  • Development of effective and test taking skills
  • Provides free printing for up to 8 pages a day
TRANSITION SUPPORT
  • Hands-on referral to campus and community resources
  • Personal counseling regarding issues related to college attendance
  • Personalized individual plan to balance school and personal life challenges

  • Textbook and cash grants
  • Meal and transportation assistance

NextUp provides a variety of supports to foster youth attending Reedley College.

The goal of NextUp is to work with foster youth students to remove barriers to attending and completing a college education.

EOPS/CARE

Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) is a state-funded program designed to help students with language, social, economic, and educational disadvantages gain access to and successfully complete a program of higher education.

Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) was established as a supplemental component of EOPS to provide educational support services and activities for the academically under prepared, welfare­dependent, single head of household student population.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Be a CA resident or CA non-resident;
  • Qualify for CA College Promise Grant Method A or B
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student (12 units) at West Hills;
  • Not have completed 70 degree applicable unit coursework
  • Be educationally disadvantaged as determined by EOPS designee or director
  • Academic eligibility (you must meet AT LEAST 1 of the following)
    • Student did not graduate from high school or did not obtain a GED
    • High school GPA was 2.5 or below
    • Student was previously in high school or college remedial education
    • Student is a first-generation college student, or is a member of underrepresented group, or primary language spoken at home is/was non-English or is a current or former foster youth

Unaccompanied
Homless Youth

There are services available to Unaccompanied Homeless Youth at State Center Community College District campuses. The designated point of contact at each campus can assist Unaccompanied Homeless Youth succeed in higher education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
  • Meet general admission requirements as outlined by State Center Community College District (SCCCD), which includes Clovis Community College, Fresno City College, Reedley College, and Madera and Oakhurst centers or be a current matriculated SCCCD student
  • Homeless youth as defined by McKinney-Vento law AB801 (student under 25 years of age)
  • Documentation required (School District letter verifying McKinney-Vento status)
STUDENTS RECEIVE
  • Referal to ongoing academic and advising support, and personal counseling
  • Career exploration and advising, schedule planning, and student educational plans (SEP)
  • Priority registration
  • Counseling courses for personal growth and development provided (Fall and Spring)
